The Australian lawyer who learnt Spanish in 30 days

I'm going to tell you a story.  

About a guy who learnt Spanish in 30 days.  

No it's not me.  

I'm a native speaker of Spanish.  

It's Sebastian one of my clients.  

Australian lawyer who wanted to learn Spanish fast.  

To move to Latin America and have a more enjoyable life there.  

He was starting from scratch so there was a lot of work to do.  

Fortunately he was insanely disciplined and had 4-8 hours a day to study.  

This is what we did:  

First thing was to get him to a conversational level.   

That implies learning hundreds of sentences for all the common scenarios and conversations.

It's time for Language Islands!  

In his case we took it to the next level.  

We prepared thousands and thousands of sentences about every possible topic.  

From talking about himself to ranting about Australian politics.      

Then we drilled those sentences over and over again.  

Reading them aloud over and over again.  

Then using active recall.  

Looking at the English version and trying to say it in Spanish.  

In a few days he was already speaking some Spanish.  

But in order to have a proper conversation.  

You can't only repeat some memorised sentences.  

You need to understand what they're telling you as well.  

We needed to get good at understanding the language as well.  

It was time for Massive Input.  

He spent several hours a day reading articles and books in Spanish.  

Memorising all the unkown words he found using associations.  

And listening to native speaker podcasts.  

This also expanded his vocabulary immensely, allowing him to talk even about the things he didn't prepare for with his thousands of memorised sentences.  

The final result?   

After a month of hard work Sebastian will be able to understand Spanish and speak it well for the rest of his life.
