Moving to Latin America? Everything you need to know about learning Spanish
Dec 14, 2023More and more Americans are moving abroad.
You can't really blame them.
Why stay when you can have:
- Better weather
- Better food
- Less stress
- Lower cost of living
- Lower taxes
- Friendlier people
For most of them Latin America is the preferred option.
If you are thinking of going down this path, learning Spanish is an investment you should make early.
The sooner you are able to speak Spanish fluently, the better your experience in Latin America will be.
The problem is that when it comes to language learning 99% of people have no idea what you're doing.
You get people who after years of "immersion" can't have a 5 minute conversation without switching to English.
Those on a 3872 day Duolingo streak tend to be at the same level.
Language classes by locals are painfully slow and will take a decade to get you to fluency.
Forget about all that nonsense. It doesn't work.
This is the cold hard truth:
Living in a country is not immersion.
Most of you use English 95% of the time in your daily lives:
1. Working online.
2. Reading and watching stuff online.
3. Speaking English to other expats.
Don't expect to learn the language by breathing the local air.
So then, what?
All you need to do is to memorise words and then read, listen, speak and write in the language.
That's it.
Ok there's more to it than that.
There are many different techniques.
But essentially that's it.
What I have done is to simplify and systematise the process.
With the appropriate memorisation, reading, listening, writing and speaking exercises for each stage of the learning process, from beginner to advanced:
1. Memorisation of vocabulary.
2. Massive Input: Reading and Listening.
3. Language Islands.
4. Scriptorium & Translation exercises.
5. Listening & Repeating drills.
Remove all the chaff and keep the high impact activities that bring results quickly.
Combine High Impact exercises like memorisation, Language Islands, drills and writing with Low Effort activities like reading and listening for reviewing and consolidating...
And you'll make massive progress in record time.
Use these techniques daily and you'll be speaking fluent Spanish in 3 months or less.
