Learn Languages Faster with Dr Andrew Huberman's Neuroplasticity Protocol
Feb 26, 2024I have recently been reading a lot of Dr Andrew Huberman's work on neuroplasticity, for faster and more effective learning.
Turns out that one of the most effective ways to trigger neuroplasticity is to generate as many repetitions as possible in a short period of time.
I have been experimenting with it in different forms, combining it with what I already know about language learning.
Conclusions: Do this if you want to learn a language as fast as possible.
Massive Input is the best way to learn grammar and vocabulary in a foreign language.
This means getting as much reading and listening practice as possible.
While pleasure reading, and casually watching videos and TV shows won't hurt,
it won't be as effective as getting as many repetitions as possible in a structured manner, using mass sentences.
There are different ways to get as many repetitions as possible in language learning,
depending on the specific skill you are trying to improve:
1. Speed reading with English translation on. This is the fastest one. Best for reviewing as much content as possible.
2. Speed reading without English translation. Good for reviewing and active recall.
3. Listening to the audio while reading (x1.5 or x2 speed) with English translation. Slower than speed reading because you're limited by the speed of the audio file. Good to work on your listening comprehension and pronunciation.
4. Listening to the audio while reading (x1.5 or x2 speed) without English translation. Good for reviewing and active recall.
5. Reading aloud. This is much slower, but works on your speaking fluency.
6. Listening & Repeating drills: Fluency & pronunciation. Slowest of all, improves all your areas of your speaking: Fluency, accuracy and pronunciation.
7. Shadowing. Simultaneous Listening & Repeating. A faster and more challenging version of the previous exercise. Improves your speaking fluency, accuracy and pronunciation.
Combine these exercises in your daily learning sessions, so that you improve in all areas.
Remember that repeating ten thousand sentences ten times each will do much more for your comprehension and speaking skills than than all the casual "immersion" in the world.
If you want to understand and speak a language well, you better start doing more reps.
